A Backwards Glance, a Long Look Forward

Digital Narrative in a Digital Culture, on an initial inspection is a subject that seems unrelated to my minuscule orbit in a greater mass. Involvement in this course reveals that this subject is more pervasive in my orbit than had previously appeared on the radar.

Even the word narratology, is a word that I had not previously had occasion to need to spell, or consider. As the study of narrative being previously undercover, under hard covers of texts to which my reach had not extended. Also as we found, hidden and disguised as zeros and ones moving at Megahertz speeds along hidden paths of copper traces in computers. Appearing not as inverted alphanumeric code on a screen, but as images and creatures drawn from mythological stories, or as futuristic and undiscovered life forms. When as words, been fluid within the story line. Appearing from seemingly nowhere and returning to this void when pointed at by a cursor, that is demanding to know the links from which they have come. Links to other text, unexpected images, or to play me a tune.

I had through osmosis, absorbed an awareness of many of the features and abilities that computers make available. Games been there, but I was not there. My narrative awareness had not extended past the need to master word processing for endless correspondence. As speeding comets of human misery have unbalanced and retracted my orbit. Now not wanting to orbit to far out, and with course reading that I have not completed loading or needing to be double handled to master. Film, my intellectual dose for the week, will be viewed a second time with a more critical awareness. Computer games instead of been there might start being here, for their narrative. Hypertext being the new word on the block, blogs refreshingly new reading. Unfazed by computers that cannot spell computer terms; this one does not like blogs or narratology. We have a new world to explore.
